6Onions and garlic –
You cannot eat Indian food without coming across onions and garlic. The former in its raw or cooked form is said to control diabetes, lower blood pressure, manage cholesterol by balancing the LDL/HDL ratio, and reduce the risk of colon as well as stomach cancer. As for garlic, it is known to prevent blood clots, aid patients with high blood pressure and control sugar levels in the blood. So go ahead, treat yourself to a slice of garlic bread made with whole grain flour.
Cinnamon –
While we’re on the subject of spices, there’s no need to drop cinnamon, that hero of everything from jams to curries to cappuccino to buns to chai. Just don’t take it with sugar- or carb-laden foods or beverages. Due to its slightly sweet flavor, you can add a pinch to your tea or coffee and reduce the amount of sugar substitute you generally use. A teaspoon of powdered cinnamon drunk with warm water on an empty stomach each morning helps regulate diabetes and cholesterol.
