Over the decades, numerous diet fads have come and gone out of fashion. The diet food industry is largely based on the commercial interests of the corporates involved. It is heavily invested in a permanent customer base. And above all, diet foods simply switch out the villain of the day for something worse in most cases.

Take for example when fats were thought to be the sole cause of obesity and heart disease. Manufacturers of ‘health foods’ realized reducing the fat content in them made the tasteless appealing to customers. Hence, they started adding sugar in one form or the other to their products in order to ensure sales.

Extra additives and chemical-based flavors also need to be added in processed foods which are stripped of their natural fats. Take flavored, reduced-fat yogurt for example. Thanks to modern research, we now know that it is a bad idea. The sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and chemical flavoring in diet food are just not worth the risk for the sake of dropping a few pounds.

Alternative: Eat a wide variety of foods. Don’t be picky unless you have health issues preventing you from consuming certain things. A well-balanced and nutrient-rich daily diet along with regular exercise is a better choice than spending your money on diet foods.
